Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Hijacking of Airliners.

221.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power whether Ireland has recently taken part in international conferences concerned with the growing number of incidents of hijacking of civil airliners and the possibility of taking steps to stop the practice and to punish wrongdoers; and if he will make a statement on the problem.

This matter is being considered by the current session of the General Assembly of the United Nations at which Ireland is represented and by the legal committee of the International Civil Aviation Organisation to the deliberations of which Ireland has contributed. Irish interests have also been represented at relevant meetings of the International Air Transport Association and the International Federation of Air Line Pilots Association.

Ireland strongly supports efforts being made to overcome the problem of hijacking and I am at present preparing a Bill to give effect to the Tokyo Convention which deals with this problem.
