Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - First Line Reserve Grants.

326.

asked the Minister for Defence if he is aware that the reserve grants in respect of the first line reserve are at the same rate as they were in 1928; and if he has any proposals to increase the amount of these grants.

The rates of grant currently payable to members of the first line reserve were fixed in 1945. The adequacy of these rates has been reviewed on a number of occasions since then and I am at present having a further review carried out.

I must point out that the annual grant, which is payable after attendance at annual training, is only one item in the total remuneration of the first line reserve. During attendance at annual training members are paid the rates of pay and allowances issuable to personnel of the permanent Defence Force and the total annual remuneration payable has accordingly increased very substantially since this reserve force was established.

Will the question of grants be considered as well?

The whole question is being reviewed.
