Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Colour Television.

349.

asked the Minister for Posts and Telegraphs if in view of his recent statement in favour of colour television he will state when it is proposed to introduce this service.

No firm plans are at present under consideration for the introduction of colour television. The authority is keeping abreast of developments elsewhere and for some time to come will be conducting experimental test transmissions in colour. The existing transmitters are readily adaptable for colour television when this becomes practicable but in view of the high costs involved and the existence of more pressing needs the question of colour television is not high on the priority list.

May I ask the Minister if he has seen the cartoon in the current issue of "Hibernia" which depicts two journalists in the RTE newsroom and one says to the other:

"It's Charlie; he wants to do his economic crisis show in colour this time"?

I have not seen it, thank God.

It is a separate question.

Obviously, I should have addressed the question to the Minister for Finance.
