Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cork City House Building.

75.

asked the Minister for Local Government what moneys he intends to make available to the Cork Corporation for house building in the current financial year.

A provisional capital allocation of £600,000 in respect of local authority housing was notified to Cork Corporation last June to meet commitments existing at that time. An additional allocation of approximately £1.7m. was made for the financing of the special local authority housing project being carried out by the National Building Agency Ltd. on behalf of the corporation. A supplemental allocation, for the corporation's own housing programme, of £300,000, making a total of £900,000 for this purpose was notified on 26th September. I understand that a request for further moneys will be made by the corporation shortly and I will review the position further when this is received. The amount of capital made available to the corporation in the current year for housepurchase loans and supplementary grants is £658,351. Their actual expenditure under this heading last year was £173,367.

The total amount allocated for housing in Cork city to date in the current financial year is, therefore, of the order of £3.3 million as compared with about £1.4 million in 1968/69, and a little over £1 million in 1967/68.

Leaving aside the NBA scheme, does the Minister not appreciate that out of the £1.6 million which the Cork Corporation asked for this year they will only get £900,000 unless the Minister agrees to give a further £6 million? Does the Minister think he could agree to this as otherwise Cork Corporation will be unable to build another 150 houses?

I was not asked for it yet.
