Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Use of Tear Gas.

3.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware of any study carried out by the World Health Organisation or any other international health body into the consequences to health resulting from the use of tear gas; and, if so, if he will state the result.

I am not so aware. However, a report entitled "Chemical and Bacteriological (Biological) Weapons and the Effects of their Possible Use" was prepared by a group of qualified consultant experts appointed by the Secretary General of the United Nations in accordance with a resolution passed at the United Nations General Assembly. The group reported to the Secretary General on 30th June, 1969. A portion of the report deals with tear gas and harassing gases, describing briefly their composition, their effects and their comparative toxicity.

I am arranging to have a copy of the report placed in the Library for the convenience of Deputies.
