Vol. 241 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Cancer Research.

6.

asked the Minister for Health the amount spent in this country on cancer research; if sufficient resources are devoted to this very necessary work; and what he proposes to do to improve such research in view of the high death rate from cancer.

It is not possible for me to state with precision the total sum spent on cancer research in this country. I can, however, say that expenditure under the auspices of the Medical Research Council and St. Luke's Hospital exceeded £33,000 in the year 1968 and I am aware of expenditure from other sources which would bring the figure considerably in excess of £50,000 in that year. I consider expenditure of this order to be reasonable in our circumstances. It must be remembered that cancer research in Ireland is not isolated from the main stream of cancer research in other countries.
