Vol. 241 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Health Education.

102.

asked the Minister for Education what steps he has taken and proposes to take to ensure that all pupils leaving school will have received serious basic instructions in the elements of hygiene and first aid.

Health education including elementary first aid forms an integral part of the physical education programme for schools. In addition, teachers are requested to avail themselves of every opportunity to cultivate good health habits and high standards of personal hygiene in their pupils and they are urged to make the school a model of order, neatness and cleanliness.

In the post-primary schools instruction in these subjects is included in the programmes for physiology and hygiene, home economics, civics and environmental studies.

(Cavan): Would the Minister agree that the outside condition of the fabric and grounds of many schools in such as not to lead to the high standard of neatness, hygiene, etc., mentioned by the Minister?

Let me put it the other ways: the very large number of new schools we have built in the past number of years does lend itself to children developing a better idea of neatness and hygiene.

(Cavan): Would the Minister agree that the grounds of many of these new school buildings have been allowed to get into a serious state of disrepair and untidiness? They are a disgrace to the country.

Before proceeding further, the Chair wishes to point out that the House has no authority to site beyond five o'clock for questions and, if the Chair is to attempt to have all questions answered this evening, he will not be successful if Deputies insist on asking such a number of supplementary questions.

Could we make such an order at this stage?

No, not at this stage.
