Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Irish Hydrographic Survey

92.

asked the Minister for Defence if, owing to the urgent need for a new hydrographic survey of Irish coastal waters, he has arranged the necessary training for personnel of the Naval Service or alternatively considered borrowing competent personnel from the Irish Lights Commissioners; and if to start the survey he will consider acquiring one of the Irish Lights Commissioners' tenders shortly to become redundant.

The question of establishing a hydrographic service, as part of the Naval Service, has been under consideration but the matter has not reached the point where the necessary training of Naval Service personnel would be feasible.

The shortage of officers in the Naval Service and its current commitments preclude it from undertaking the organisation and control of hydrographic work at present.
