Vol. 242 No. 4

Ceisteanna — Questions. Oral Answers. - Rathfarnham (Dublin) Courthouse.

58.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is aware of the very bad overcrowding at Rathfarnham District Court, Dublin; if his attention has been drawn to a report (details supplied) on this matter; when new court accommodation will be provided to cater for the vastly increased population of southern Dublin; and if he will have urgent attention given to the matter.

I am aware that overcrowding occurs on certain sitting days in Rathfarnham where the courthouse is exceptionally small.

Owing to the increase in recent years in the population of Dublin city and county the suitability of the present organisation of sittings of the district court in the Dublin area has been considered by the Committee on Court Practice and Procedure who have made certain recommendations including the discontinuance of sittings at Rathfarnham.

I am considering the committee's recommendations in the light of the views expressed by all the interested parties. In the meantime, I am pursuing the idea of arranging for separate lists of cases, with fixed times for each list, in Rathfarnham. This should eliminate, or at least reduce, the problem of overcrowding.
