Vol. 242 No. 8

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Local Authority Housing.

22.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give details of the number of applicants on the housing waiting lists of each of the local authorities in the country; and if he can give details of the total number of persons, men, women and children, represented on these waiting lists.

As housing authorities are not now required to submit details of housing applications in support of their proposals for housing schemes, the detailed information requested by the Deputy is not available in my Department for housing authorities generally.

The Minister tells us that he does not know the national position in regard to the waiting list composed of those people who are looking for houses.

I have not got the detailed information the Deputy requires. It is unnecessary to frustrate housing authorities by requiring the submission of such details.

Is the Minister aware that all he is asked for in the question is some simple addition, the adding together of the number of people on the waiting list of the various local authorities? Is the Minister incapable of tackling this problem?

It is too complex.

What I am saying is I do not require housing authorities to submit this kind of detail to my Department.

Would the Minister not think that a Minister with some curiosity about housing needs would have that information?

I prefer to leave the housing authorities to get on with the essential work of providing houses rather than tie them up in this kind of nonsense.

Would the Minister state if this kind of information would be of value to him in deciding on a proper housing programme? Would it not be necessary for him to have that information?

The Minister is not interested.

Housing authorities have been pressed, with a great deal of success, to get ahead with the provision of houses. I deal with the applications according as they come to me and, in order to facilitate housing authorities in carrying out these essential operations, they have been relieved of the necessity to provide these non-essential statistics.

I am calling Question No. 23. Would Deputies please limit the number of their supplementaries? There are over 140 questions on the Order Paper.

23.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will give details of the number of houses built by each of the county councils, county boroughs, urban councils and other housing authorities throughout the country in each of the past five years; and how many houses each of them propose to build in 1970.

As the reply is in the form of a tabular statement, I propose with your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, to have it circulated with the Official Report.

Detailed information regarding the number of dwellings which will be completed by each housing authority before the end of the 1969-70 financial year is not available in my Department. Column 7 of the statement gives the number of dwellings provided by each in the first six months of the current financial year. It is estimated that the total number of dwellings to be completed in 1969-70 will be of the order of 4,500.
