Vol. 242 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Issue of Death Certificate.

15.

asked the Minister for Health if he is aware that burial can take place prior to the issue of a death certificate; and if he has any proposals to alter the present situation.

I am aware of the present situation in this matter. A Births and Deaths Registration Bill which is being drafted at present will included a provision that a burial cannot take place until a medical certificate of cause of death has been obtained or, alternatively, evidence is produced to show that the coroner has been notified of the death.

Is the Minister not aware that very many deaths are neither registered nor certified and that this matter was brought to the attention of the former Minister for Health over two years ago? May I ask the Minister when this matter will be brought before the Dáil?

As far as I know the Bill is very nearly ready for submission to the Dáil. It will be ready within the next three to six months.
