Mr. Desmond

asked the Taoiseach the number and tonnage of ships-entering and leaving and the bulk and value of cargoes imported and exported for each port in Ireland at which merchant ships or a ship called for each of the years 1959 to 1968, inclusive.

Mr. O'Malley

All the particulars requested by the Deputy for each port are not available on a comparable basis. Annual information on the numbers and net registered tonnage of vessels arriving in the principal ports and the corresponding weight of goods loaded and unloaded comes generally from returns made by harbour authorities. Information on the value of imports and exports through individual ports comes from a special analysis of external trade figures carried out at five yearly intervals, the latest being for the year 1964.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to circulate in the Official Report a statement setting out the information requested in so far as it is readily available.

Following is the statement:—

Notes on Table 1.

(a) The following Scheduled Harbour Authorities had only minimal merchant shipping activity in the period concerned—Annagassan, Ballyshannon, Baltimore-Skibbereen, Dingle, Killybegs, Kinsale, Wexford, Youghal.

(b) The figures for Numbers and Net Tonnage of Arrivals of vessels may be taken as also representing Departures of Vessels and Net Tonnage of Departures.

(c) Comparable figures for the year 1959 are not available.

(d) The data do not cover activity relating to ocean-going liners, fishing vessels or pleasure boats.

(e) The figures shown for the tonnage of goods handled at ports exclude the weight of livestock but cover all other goods including goods in the coastal trade.

(f) Up to and including 1966 annual figures for the number of vessels and their net registered tonnage, arriving in or departing from Irish Ports have been compiled from returns furnished by the Customs Officials at the Ports. These figures have been published in the Annual Trade and Shipping Statistics. They do not however provide any information on the tonnage of goods loaded and unloaded.
