Vol. 243 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Drug Trafficking.

11.

asked the Minister for Health if his attention has been drawn to a statement referred to by the senior lecturer of the College of Pharmacy in Dublin that Cork city was getting the reputation of becoming the drug capital of the State, mainly through smuggling; if he has investigated this allegation; and if he is in a position to make a statement on it.

I have seen a recent press report regarding the statement referred to by the Deputy and I am having inquiries made to ascertain the position.

The Deputy is no doubt aware of the action which I have taken following the interim recommendations of the working party on drug abuse established by my predecessor, in particular, the proposed controls on amphetamines and the amendment of the Health Bill, 1969, to deal with the unauthorised possession of certain classes of drugs liable to abuse.

The implementation of these measures should assist considerably in combating the spread of drug abuse in this country.
