Vol. 243 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Laois Fatal Road Accidents.

49.

asked the Minister for Justice if legal proceedings were taken in all cases of fatal road accidents involving cars in County Laois over the past two years; if in any case the driver of a car involved failed to report such fatal accident; and, if so, in how many cases.

In the past two years there were 10 fatal road accidents involving cars in County Laois. Proceedings were taken in 5 cases. There were two instances in which the driver involved failed to report the accident.

May I ask the Minister if proceedings were instituted in the case of the two drivers who failed to report the accidents?

They were.

May I ask the Minister if he is satisfied that not only was justice done but that justice was seen to be done in these cases?

This, Sir, is another attempt to criticise the judiciary.

No, it is not. In order to elicit more information from the Minister, may I ask the Minister if he is quite satisfied that justice appeared to be done and, if he is not satisfied that justice was done in these cases, has he any machinery at his disposal whereby an inquiry could be instituted to ascertain that not only was justice done but that justice was seen to be done?

I pointed out to Deputy Flanagan last week that he could not discuss judicial decisions on any cases in this House. I hope I do not have to tell him that again now.

There will be no need, Sir.
