Vol. 243 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Consular Service.

54.

asked the Minister for External Affairs how many honorary consuls are in existence at the moment; whether he will give a list of such honorary consuls and their countries; whether there is any regular review procedure of such appointments; and when the honorary consul in Johannesburg was appointed.

For the answers to the first and second parts of the Deputy's question I would refer him to the current Directory of State Services.

My Department is in constant touch with our honorary consuls abroad in the normal course of consular business, and their appointments are reviewed as the need arises.

Our present honorary consul in Johannesburg was appointed on 31st May, 1965.

Is the Minister aware that our honorary consul in Johannesburg appears to be somewhat confused as to whether he is representing the United Kingdom or this State and would the Minister look into the matter and correct any misapprehension the honorary consul may have?

If the Deputy can offer me more than an assertion, I would.

I can offer more than an assertion.
