Vol. 243 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Foreign Investments.

60.

asked the Minister for Finance whether, in view of his statement that the continued dependence on external sources of finance is not a prudent course as there is no control over the investment decisions of foreigners, he is aware of the large volume of foreign securities held by Irish nationals and companies; and whether he is considering any steps to alter this position.

I am aware that as a result of various factors, a considerable volume of foreign investment is held by the private sector. It is Government policy to encourage the repatriation of these funds for productive investment in Ireland. It must be remembered, however, that income from foreign investments is a valuable credit in our balance of international payments.

Does the Minister consider that this dealing is increasing at a rate which would demand his intervention?

No, I do not think so.
