Vol. 243 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - University Governing Bodies.

115.

asked the Minister for Education whether his Department had any policy recommendation on the granting of student representations on the governing bodies of the universities.

This is a matter which will fall to be considered by the Government in connection with future legislation for the reconstitution of the universities. In relation to such consideration the Government will then have available to them the views of the Higher Education Authority.

I might add that the Government is favourably disposed to student representation on the appropriate university bodies.

May we take it that, pending the introduction of legislation, the Minister and the Government will take the opportunity afforded by the forthcoming Governing Body election in UCD to avail of at least one of the Government appointments to appoint a student representative?

The Deputy can take it that the Government will always make the right decision.

I am reassured. I take that as an affirmative.
