Vol. 243 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Railway Level Crossings.

8.

asked the Minister for Local Government if, in view of the very great difference in cost that may be involved, the serious risk to life and other factors, he has made any decision for or against automatically controlled railway level crossings on major and other roads.

Each case is considered on its merits. Where a question arises of providing or altering a level crossing as in part of a road improvement scheme the decision as to the type of crossing is one primarily for the local authority. While the cost factor is considered, safety is the main consideration.

Where the railway company wish to change the form of control at a level crossing on a public road the decision rests with the Minister for Transport and Power under section 9 of the Transport Act, 1958. He consults me in regard to each case and again safety is the main factor governing my recommendations to him.
