Vol. 244 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Griffith Centenary.

14.

asked the Taoiseach if he will give details of the Government's proposals to commemorate the centenary of the birth next year of the late President Arthur Griffith; and in what way the event will be marked by national commemorative tribute.

The Centenary of the birth of Arthur Griffith is due in 1971 and the 50th anniversary of his death is due in 1972. In the latter year also will fall the 50th anniversaries of a number of Civil War deaths.

As I said before in this House, I would be prepared to facilitate the setting-up of an all-party committee to see how best we could commemorate those who died in the Civil War period.

Might I ask the Taoiseach, in view of the acceptance, practically, of the suggestion in the question, would he not also, in view of the fact that next year will be 800 years after the death of Dermot McMorrough, consider commemorating that?
