Vol. 244 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Deserted Wives Allowances.

19.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare if there is any special allowance payable to the many married women deserted by husbands who cannot be located in England and elsewhere.

At present there are no specific provisions in social welfare legislation for the payment of allowances to married women who have been deserted by their husbands. Proposals for legislation to provide a scheme of financial assistance for deserted wives have been prepared and I hope to be in a position to introduce this legislation in Dáil Éireann in the very near future. A deserted wife can of course obtain home assistance if her circumstances warrant it.
