Vol. 244 No. 3

Written Answers. - Dublin Airport Roads.

234.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power by whom the new approach and exit roads at Dublin Airport were designed, approved and built; what public funds were paid towards the cost of their construction; why the roads were not built in accordance with modern engineering standards without sharp turns and intersections; and if steps will be taken immediately to clearly signpost the road complex particularly during the hours of darkness and to provide ample public lighting on it, particularly at all junctions and sharp bends.

The new approach and exit roads at Dublin Airport were designed by the chief airports engineer of my Department. The roads were approved and built by my Department. The Minister for Local Government was consulted in connection with the provision of the new approach road. Dublin County Council were consulted in regard to the junction with county roads. The system of traffic lights at the junction of the new approach road with the Dublin-Swords road was designed and installed by Dublin County Council for my Department.

The cost of the new roads is being paid out of the Vote for Transport and Power. The total cost is estimated at £100,000.

The present traffic circulation system at the airport is an interim one which, it is expected, will continue in operation only for the next two years or so. For that reason the curves and intersections of the roads were not designed to the higher standard that would have been desirable for traffic circulation on a permanent basis.

Steps are being taken to improve the signposting on the roads constructed by my Department and arrangements are being made for the provision of public lighting on all the public roads in the terminal area.
