Vol. 244 No. 3

Written Answers. - Industrial Workers.

235.

asked the Minister for Labour how many workers during the next ten years will be required to change their jobs due to technological progress, greater industrial integration, foreign competition or changes in farm structures; and if steps will be taken to retrain workers for industries before they lose their existing jobs.

It would not be possible to forecast the number of workers who will change their jobs during the next ten years. Many such changes may, however, be expected in an expanding and dynamic economy.

Experience in this country and elsewhere suggests that most workers seeking a change will secure alternative employment without formal retraining.

An Chomhairle Oiliúna will be stimulating the maximum possible amount of training and retraining within industry. To the extent that necessary retraining is not possible within industry this can be provided directly by An Chomhairle in their training centres. Trainees in these centres are paid allowances in lieu of wages.
