Vol. 244 No. 5

Order of Business.

It is proposed to take business in the following order: Nos. 1 and 10 and in No. 10 Vote 26. Questions at 2.30 p.m.

I wonder would it be possible particularly on a Thursday morning to get the Order of Business a little earlier? We only received it when we were actually sitting in the benches.

I understand the practice was that the Whips got together at least informally on the night before and agreed at that stage. Was that not it? I will make sure it is done in future.

Thank you.

Is there any chance of getting more copies of the Minister for Local Government's speech on the Estimates?

How many?

There were only 22, or something.

The second edition.

There were about 30.

There will be some more available.

I wish to give notice that I intend to raise the subject matter of Question No. 61 on today's Order Paper on the Adjournment.

The Chair will communicate with the Deputy.

How can he give notice that he is raising a question which is on today's Order Paper?

The Minister is out of order.

He said "on today's Order Paper".

It was No. 62 on yesterday's Order Paper. It is No. 61 on today's Order Paper.

Question No. 62 on yesterday's Order Paper was not reached. How can he give notice that he will raise it on the Adjournment before it has been answered at all?

He is expecting a very disappointing reply from the Minister.

From the Minister for Local Government's past performance he can anticipate the answer.

For once I think the Minister is right.

It is not addressed to me at all.

This is surely a precedent?

I might say this is rather unusual. I understood the question had been dealt with. It is rather premature to raise the matter on the Adjournment.

It is easy to anticipate the type of answer he will get from the Minister for Local Government.

It just shows the whole thing is a fake.

I was told that the latest time I could raise this matter is 3.30 today. It is most unlikely that Question No. 61 will be reached by 3.30 today and therefore——

Then the Deputy cannot raise it.

——I am giving notice now.

We will consider the Deputy's request.

I wish to raise the subject matter of Question No. 19 on last Thursday's Order Paper——

More like it.

——regarding the school medical service and the breakdown of the school medical services for primary school children. I have not received any satisfactory information on this important matter and I wish to raise it on the Adjournment.

The Chair will communicate with Deputy O'Leary.

A Cheann Comhairle, in view of this precedent, which apparently you are considering, may I suggest to you that it would be in order for the Minister to withhold his answer in the event of your giving permission to raise this question?

The Chair has not given permission.

I am just raising this possibility to stymie this kind of activity.

Decide a week before what you are going to raise on the Adjournment.

We know what the Minister for Local Government is going to say.

It is the Minister for Finance's question. It is not the Minister for Local Government's at all.

He is confused enough with Local Government.
