Vol. 244 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Midland Bog Development.

91.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power if he will direct the attention of Bord na Móna to the vast area of good bog convenient to the main road between Mountmellick and Portlaoise which would be suitable for a development scheme; and if such a proposal will be considered by the board so that increased employment can be given in view of the fact that there is a great curtailment of private turf cutting on this bog.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that the only area of bog convenient to the main road between Mountmellick and Portlaoise is the one which is known to them as the Clonsoghey bog. This is a small area of approximately 350 acres and it would not be of sufficient size for economic production of peat fuel by the board's present methods. The board has, however, plans to survey the bog in the near future with a view to ascertaining its moss peat potential and if practicable will engage in development in that direction.

92.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power what immediate steps are to be taken by Bord na Móna to provide additional employment for those who urgently need it in the districts of Turraun and Pullough, County Offaly; and if he will inform the board of the urgent necessity of making work available in this district.

I am informed by Bord na Móna that they are giving all the employment possible, consistent with their requirements, in the districts of Turraun and Pullough.
