Vol. 244 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Kerry Rural Electrification.

101.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power when ESB supply will be extended to Octive Valley, Waterville, County Kerry, where there are over 100 families.

I am informed by the ESB that Octive Valley is in the board's Caherdaniel rural area which is the second last rural area in County Kerry scheduled for recanvass under the rural electrification post development scheme. The following are the rural areas in County Kerry in which work has to be carried out under the planned post development scheme— Ballydavid / Ballyferriter, Killorglin, Kilgarvan, Templenoe, Sneem, Waterville, Caherdaniel and Tuosist.

The board hope to carry out construction in the order mentioned above but it is not possible at this stage to say when the areas will be reached. The board have not been able to make the progress hoped for with the post development schemes in County Kerry because of the demand on available resources to meet priority connections and system improvement to maintain an adequate supply to those already connected.

It would seem that it will be at least four years before these people get connection by the ESB. As this is part of the Kerry Gaeltacht I would ask the Minister to take a second look at it. He may be able to do something for them.

I shall take it up with the ESB. There is a financial consideration involved, of course. However, I shall take it up.
