Vol. 244 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sugar Confectionery Imports.

129.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce the quantity and value of sugar confectionery imported in (a) the last six months for which figures are available and (b) the same months four years ago; if he is aware that substantial quantities of foreign sugar confectionery are now on sale here; and that employment in the Irish sugar confectionery industry is consequently threatened; and what steps he will take to remedy the situation.

I presume that the question relates to imports of sweets and toffees, chewing gum and chocolate. Total imports of these goods amounted to 38,395 cwts, value £548,534, during the six months ended 31st December, 1969, and to 6,079 cwts, value £93,404, during the same period in 1965. Exports during the same period amounted to 128,728 cwts, value £1,994,010, in 1969, and 110,417 cwts, value £1,500,208, in 1965.

Representations have been made to me about the effects of increased imports of sweets and toffees on the Irish industry. The position is being examined: any action in regard to the duty would entail consultation with the British authorities in accordance with Article XII of the Anglo-Irish Free Trade Area Agreement.

The remaining questions will appear on next Tuesday's Order Paper. Deputies may get written replies if they so wish.
