Vol. 244 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Galway Housing Scheme.

36.

asked the Minister for Local Government the present position regarding the proposed new housing scheme at Tuam, County Galway.

I have approved lay-out and house plans for 18 houses as the first stage of a scheme of 66 houses at Tuam. The submission by the county council of building proposals is now awaited.

Is the Minister aware of the grave housing shortage in Tuam and that when a house became vacant recently there were over 50 applicants for it? In view of that, would he not do what is necessary to enable this housing scheme to proceed as soon as possible?

I am aware of the position in Tuam and, as I have said, the lay-out and house plans have, in fact, been approved as the Deputy would have known if he had read the local papers last week.

That was in anticipation.

That is why I informed Deputy Kitt of the position last week.

That would not be the first time the Minister did that.

I always reply to my letters.

(Interruptions.)

If the Deputy read the local papers he would know all this information.

Could the Minister tell me where that appeared?

The Tuam Herald.

Does the Minister read all these papers?

Oh, yes, I get copies of all the relevant extracts from these papers.
