Vol. 244 No. 13

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Army Medical Services.

27.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will consider the possibility of making available full treatment to the members of military personnel families; and if he will make a statement on the availability of medical services to the families of Army personnel.

Under the Health Acts health authorities provide certain medical, institutional and specialist services. Soldiers' dependants have the same right to such services as other members of the community in similar circumstances. Where the dependant receives the treatment in a public ward of a hospital operated or approved by the local health authority my Department defrays any charges made by the health authority.

In the Curragh training camp area, treatment is provided free of charge in the families section of the general military hospital and in addition, as a special case, domiciliary treatment is provided by army medical officers.

Officers' dependants are not eligible for medical treatment at the expense of my Department.

The provisions outlined are considered reasonable and it is not proposed to extend them.
