Vol. 244 No. 14

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Thalidomide: Child Victims.

1.

Dr. Browne

andDr. O'Connell asked the Minister for Health whether the recent statement made by the company concerned regarding compensation for the grave deformities arising from the use of thalidomide applies to child victims of this drug who reside in Ireland.

I presume that the Deputies' question relates to a reported offer of about £12 million compensation by a West German firm in respect of children said to be deformed because of thalidomide.

I have seen press reports from which it would appear that the offer would not apply to children in this country. However, I am having inquiries made in the matter and I will communicate with the Deputies when I have clarified the position.

I am grateful for that reply. Could I ask the Minister whether he has any register of these unfortunate people? Is there any central organisation in this country to look after these people's interests?

A survey was undertaken by a member of the Medical Research Council which suggested that some 53 children were born here with defects which might be attributable to thalidomide. That is as far as we have got with the information. The Department of External Affairs should be able to give the parents of these children some advice as to what their legal position is and whether they would be able to get compensation.
