Vol. 244 No. 14

Written Answers. - Forestry Division.

26.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will give the following information regarding employment and service-pay of forestry workers as at a recent date: (a) the number in receipt of 5/- service-pay, 10/- service-pay, 15/- service-pay, 20/- service-pay and no service-pay, (b) the total number of employees and (c) each group as a percentage of the total number of employees.

With regard to (a) of the Deputy's question the position on 3rd February, 1970, the latest date for which figures are available, was:

930 men in receipt of

5/-

872,,,,,, ,,

10/-

612,,,,,, ,,

15/-

384,,,,,, ,,

20/-

The number of men not in receipt of service pay was 702. The total number of men is 3,500 and the percentage in each category is 27 per cent; 25 per cent; 17 per cent; 11 per cent and 20 per cent respectively.

27.

asked the Minister for Lands if he will give the following particulars of gratuities paid to forestry workers in the past three years: the ten smallest gratuities, the ten median gratuities, and the ten highest gratuities, together with the retiring wage and number of service years in each case.

To compile the information sought by the Deputy would involve inordinate expenditure of staff time in research on records which have been put away for storage. I propose instead to supply particulars of all gratuities paid to forestry workers during 1969. Following are the details:

asked the Minister for Lands if he will state the amount of pension which would have been paid to each of the retired forestry workers referred to in a reply to Question 27 of today if the pension scheme for un-established State employees offered to the trade unions in November, 1969, had been in operation, expressing the pension payable as a percentage of the actual retiring wage on which the gratuity, in each case, was calculated.

The information sought by the Deputy would involve a substantial amount of nugatory work on purely hypothetical calculations and the expenditure of official time involved in making such calculations would not be justified.
