Vol. 245 No. 5

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Defence Forces.

92.

asked the Minister for Defence if he will ensure that within a reasonable time all members of the Army and Navy who are paid by cheque shall receive an itemised statement on each occasion of the gross amount due, how it is made up and what deductions have been made.

Officers of the permanent Defence Force are paid monthly by cheque, with which they receive an itemised statement showing how the amount payable has been calculated.

The vast majority of non-commissioned officers and privates are paid locally and weekly in cash. The payroll which they sign on receiving their pay gives details of how the net entitlement was calculated. The remainder—mainly those on duty with An Fórsa Cosanta Áitiúil—are paid by cheque by local arrangement between their pay officers and the command cashiers. I am having the Deputy's request examined with regard to this group. An explanation of how a soldier's account is made up or stands is, of course, always supplied on request by him.
