Vol. 246 No. 1

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Accommodation for Gardaí.

38.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will state in respect of official accommodation provided for gardaí (a) the proposed new rent charges for the different categories of such accommodation and (b) if a member of the Garda will be free to vacate such accommodation and provide his own accommodation.

The level of deductions to be made in respect of official accommodation in the light of the Conroy Commission recommendations which I have accepted in principle, is a matter for discussion under the Garda Síochána conciliation and arbitration scheme and, accordingly, I am not in a position to comment. The matter is at present before the Garda Síochána conciliation council.

As regards the second part of the question, I have accepted the recommendation of the Conroy Commission that no unmarried member of the force should be compelled to live in official quarters.
