Vol. 246 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Preservation of Meath Priory.

27.

asked the Minister for Finance the policy of the Office of Public Works in regard to the preservation and restoration of St. John's Priory, Newtown, Trim, County Meath.

St. John's Priory, Newtown, Trim, is not in State care. Accordingly, the Commissioners of Public Works are not at present entitled to carry out any works to it.

The question of taking the monument into State care is under consideration.

Is it designated as a national monument?

It is not in State care. I look on it as a national monument of some importance which I think the State should take in charge.

Can we anticipate early action to do so?

The matter is being considered.
