Vol. 246 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Rail Services.

33.

asked the Minister for Transport and Power the present position in regard to the introduction of new Dublin rail services, particularly in relation to the north-west area where a railroad already exists.

The determination of the need for new rail services is, under statute, the responsibility of CIE. I am informed by the board that, apart from improving existing services as required, they have no plans at present for introducing new Dublin suburban rail services. The board are unable to say if, or when, commuter rail services will be provided for the residents of north-west Dublin. At the present time the demand for new commuter services on the existing main railway line would not justify the expense.

Would the Minister not agree in view of questions put to him in the past year regarding the difficulties of travelling from the north-west area of Dublin city to the centre, not only for purposes of education and work but also for hospital attendance, that the introduction of increased passenger rail services in the north-west area would be of great benefit to the community?

It is a question of supply and demand. CIE must look at the matter in a businesslike way and this they are doing. This is their responsibility.
