Vol. 246 No. 3

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Woollen Company.

19.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce whether he is aware of the serious situation that has arisen for a small woollen company (name supplied) in County Tipperary because of its inability to market a large quantity of tweed produced by it in the face of growing imports of cloth of all kind, including synthetic materials; and that this situation is placing in jeopardy the economic life of the area and the livelihood of 200 workers; and whether he he is in a position to take steps immediately to ensure the continued existence of this industry which is so vital to the area concerned.

I am aware that the firm referred to may find it necessary to introduce some short-time working because of marketing problems though I cannot accept the Deputy's implication in that connection. The Deputy may, however, be assured that my Department have been and are doing all they can to assist the firm in their efforts to return to full-time working as soon as possible.
