Vol. 246 No. 4

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Medical Profession Discussions.

30.

asked the Minister for Justice if the discussions scheduled for the 24th April between his Department and the Irish Medical Association and the Medical Union have been satisfactorily concluded; and, if so, if he will make a statement on the agreement reached.

The discussions referred to by the Deputy have not been concluded, and a further meeting has been arranged for tomorrow. I am not in a position to make a statement at present.

Would the Minister not agree that these discussions have been going on for a considerable length of time? In the meantime, proper tests are not being operated.

There is a meeting arranged for tomorrow. There could be nothing more prompt than that.

I would bring it to the Minister's attention that these discussions were supposed to have taken place since last August or September. Does the Minister not agree that this is too long a period for these discussions? There is a need for them to be brought to a speedy conclusion.

I know that. The Deputy can leave it to the meeting tomorrow.

Will the Minister say if there is going to be a change of policy on this matter with the advent of another Minister?

Question No. 31.
