Vol. 246 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - County Tipperary Unemployment.

51.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the large number of people unemployed in Clonmel, County Tipperary, and of a number of firms there which have let employees go in the past two weeks; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the difficulties which certain industries in the town have been experiencing. Recent expansions of two existing industries, with the aid of State grants, are, however, expected to offset at least to some extent the unemployment resulting from these difficulties.

The IDA are, of course, doing everything possible to secure new industries for areas in the country where serious unemployment exists.

52.

asked the Minister for Industry and Commerce if he is aware of the large number of unemployed in Tipperary town; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

I am aware of the employment position in Tipperary town and I am aware that special efforts are being made by the IDA in association with local interests and with the Shannon Free Airport Development Company to promote developments in the town that will create new jobs.
