Vol. 246 No. 10

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - State Security Service.

3.

asked the Taoiseach whether he has under consideration a review of the security forces at the service of the State; whether he proposes to co-ordinate their operation; and whether he will consult with the Opposition leaders on this vital matter.

The security requirements of the State, including the coordination of the agencies concerned, are kept under constant review.

Is the Taoiseach himself now in full contact with all the security forces and is there a last report on all information coming in under their review? Is that at the Taoiseach's disposal at present?

I am satisfied I am getting full information on all material aspects.

Does the Taoiseach consider it would be useful to take the leaders of Opposition Parties into his confidence on the security position?

That is a separate question.

It is in the question.

There are procedures in the House and, if the Deputy gives way to me, I can answer his question. If the Deputy remains standing I have no means of knowing if he has completed his supplementary question.

I am sorry.

I regard security matters as matters to be kept in the closest possible circle. I do not believe that sharing security matters of this nature with the leaders of the Opposition is in the best interests of security.

It has been done in other countries.

Is the Taoiseach aware of the fact that loyalty within the Army is very divided at the moment and has been for some time past?

I do not believe that is the case at all. On the contrary.

4.

asked the Taoiseach whether he will consider an arrangement whereby a copy of all classified top secret reports, furnished by security officials to their respective Ministers, will be simultaneously lodged with him; and if he will take steps to set up security arrangements somewhat on these lines.

As I have already informed the House, I have had discussions with the Ministers for Defence and Justice, and I am satisfied that I will be kept fully informed of all security matters that ought to be drawn to my attention.

Is the Taoiseach now satisfied that collective responsibility has been re-established in his Cabinet?

No question about that.

Quite sure there is not a cuckoo in the nest still?

Question No. 5 for written answer.
