Vol. 246 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dwelling Conversion Grants.

58.

asked the Minister for Local Government if he will consider the allocation of grants for the conversion of sections of private dwellings into self contained flat units for old aged members of the families concerned.

The normal reconstruction grants, available under the Housing Act, 1966, are payable for work such as the conversion of dwelling houses into two or more units.

The Minister is aware that there is an acute shortage of accommodation for old people. Would he consider introducing special grants for the conversion of garages and other buildings for the purposes of housing the aged?

Reconstruction grants apply to any conversion of buildings. I think the situation is covered.

The suggestion is a good one.

It merits consideration.
