With your permission, Sir, I propose to take Questions Nos. 96 to 100, inclusive, together.
The figures of unregistered letters alleged to have been lost in the post cover only cases in which loss of money is reported but a record of the total amount of money involved in such cases is not maintained. The maintenance of such a record would not contribute materially to the detection or prevention of losses. All reports of losses are fully investigated as far as practicable.
The statistics maintained in respect of losses from registered letters relate only to the amount of compensation paid and do not distinguish between losses of money or cash and losses of other items of value. These statistics relate to the country as a whole; separate figures in respect of losses from registered letters sent to and from Dublin are not available.
The information available is set out in a tabular statement, which, with your permission, Sir, I propose to have circulated with the Official Report.
