Vol. 247 No. 2

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Civil Legal Aid.

57.

asked the Minister for Justice if he will consider the introduction of civil legal aid.

I do not intend to introduce legislation to provide for legal aid in civil cases. The huge expenditure that would be involved could not be justified.

Would the Minister not agree that the absence of civil legal aid contains an element of injustice in that poor people cannot afford to take legal action——

This, again, is a separate question. The Deputy is making an argument.

——because of cost involved and would the Minister bear in mind the fact that they have such a scheme in Britain?

I am so aware but the Deputy will be aware, if he consults with some of his colleagues on his own front bench, that they take a different view. My own view is closer to that of the Deputy.

But the Minister will do nothing about it.
