Detailed records of road accidents prior to 1965 are not retained by the Garda and the statistics for those years are therefore not available. Publication of road accident statistics is a matter for An Foras Forbartha and the analysis and evaluation of accident figures and reports are also matters for the Foras to whom the Garda Síochána supply full particulars of road accidents. The Garda do not attempt to assign causes for individual accidents, some of which may be the subject of civil actions, nor would they comment publicly on decisions taken by local authorities in regard to road improvements. The Minister with overall responsibility for road safety matters is the Minister for Local Government.
