Vol. 247 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Sligo Educational Courses.

17.

asked the Minister for Education (a) what courses will be available for students, male and female, who have completed the leaving certificate course in the Sligo Regional College of Technology, (b) what other courses will be available to train boys and girls for entry to industry—general and tourist—in the Sligo region and (c) what precisely will be the entry requirements for all these courses.

The provision of courses in the Sligo Regional Technical College and the entry requirements for such courses are primarily a matter for the board of management of the college.

No rigid pattern of courses has been fixed; local needs will determine the necessity for specific courses.

It is envisaged, however, that the following courses may be provided:

(a) Post-Leaving Certificate:

Courses for technician qualifications related to such fields as mechanical engineering, building construction, automobile engineering, commercial and secretarial courses.

(b) Other Courses:

Senior cycle i.e. post intermediate courses leading to leaving certificate with a special bias towards commerce, science and technical subjects; junior and senior trade certificate courses for apprentices; courses for apprentices in the distributive trades and adult education courses.
