Vol. 247 No. 6

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Ballymacarbry (Clonmel) School.

18.

asked the Minister for Education if he will state in relation to the construction of the new national school at Newtown, Ballymacarbry, Clonmel, County Tipperary, (a) when work will commence, (b) when work will be completed, (c) the extent of the accommodation to be provided, (d) how many teachers will be provided and (e) what existing schools will be amalgamated in the new school.

23.

asked the Minister for Education if he can give an assurance that adequate school transport to the new school at Newtown, Ballymacarbry, Clonmel, County Tipperary, will be available when the adjoining schools at Nire, Bennettschurch and Cloughclooney are closed.

With your permission, a Cheann Comhairle, I propose to take Questions Nos. 18 and 23 together.

The new central school proposed for Newtown will replace the existing Newtown, Bennettschurch, Glenanore and Cloughclooney schools. The new school will have accommodation in six classrooms and a general purposes room. On the basis of the present enrolment figures a staff of six teachers will be required.

Planning has not yet reached the stage when my Department will be in a position to sanction the grant. I cannot say, therefore, when work on the erection of the new school will commence. The normal contract period allowed for the erection of a new school of this size is 12 months.

Transport will be provided for the conveyance of all schoolgoing children of the Glenanore, Bennettschurch and Cloughclooney school districts to the new central school.
