Vol. 247 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Import of Dogs.

11.

asked the Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries if it is proposed to review the regulations governing the entry of dogs to this country; and, if so, when this review will be initiated.

It is proposed to review the present ban on imports from Britain not earlier than six months after the latest outbreak of rabies in that country. As the most recent outbreak there occurred in March, 1970, the earliest the position can be reviewed is in September, provided of course that there are no further outbreaks in the meantime.

The present prohibition on imports from countries other than Britain, which normally constitute the main source of this dangerous disease, will be considered in due course in the light of a review which is being made by my Department of the conditions under which it would be considered safe in the future to allow imports.
