Vol. 247 No. 7

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Payment of Old Age Pension.

2.

asked the Minister for Social Welfare the reasons for the delay in issuing payment of the old age pension to an applicant (details supplied).

The applicant in this case had been employed for many years in a position which was not regarded as insurable for the purpose of the Social Welfare Acts. She had accepted that situation until shortly before reaching her 70th birthday, when she raised the question of the insurability of her employment with my Department. Following examination of the matter a deciding officer ruled in January, 1969, that the employment was not, in fact, insurable under the Acts, but this decision was later reversed on appeal, principally on the grounds that the case was a borderline one and that the applicant should be given the benefit of any doubt there was. Payment of the arrears of contributions has been secured and a contributory old age pension has been awarded.

From what date has the pension been awarded?

The pension was awarded early in June. There were two numbers involved. The applicant quoted 118319 and we later found the number was 180123. The two numbers created some confusion.

Will the pension be paid from the date on which she attained 70 years of age?

No, only from the 29th May, 1970.
