Vol. 247 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Shannon Navigation.

31.

asked the Minister for Finance if he is aware that the level of the water in the Shannon between Athlone and Tarmonbarry is a hazard to boat users due to the fact that the sluice gates have been adjusted recently; and if he will take steps to have this river made safe for boating.

I am advised that the level of the water in the River Shannon between Athlone and Tarmonbarry is not hazardous for boat users at present. In periods of drought the water level on this stretch of the river can fall below a safe navigational level. As I recently announced, the Commissioners of Public Works are about to undertake a comprehensive scheme of improvement works which will ensure that, except in time of exceptional drought, all vessels will be able to navigate the channel in safety.
