Vol. 247 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Mayo School Closure.

40.

asked the Minister for Education if he will consider, with regard to the proposal to close Skirdagh national school, Newport, County Mayo, having the decision revised in view of the feelings of parents in the school area.

There are no plans to close Skirdagh national school in the near future.

It has been decided, however, that the educational interests of the children of the whole Newport area can best be served by the erection of two new central schools in Newport, one for boys and the other for girls. These schools would replace the existing boys and convent schools in Newport and also the schools at Derrada, Skirdagh, Kilmore and Knockloughra.

Could the Minister tell me when it is proposed to close Skirdagh national school?

I would think probably when the new schools are ready in Newport.

Can the Minister tell me when this school will be erected or extended?

I have no further information.

The Minister's Department will not close the school for a few years?

I will not say a few years but it will not be closed in the immediate future.

If it takes as long to build a school in Newport as it takes in other places, then it will be a few years.
