Vol. 247 No. 11

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Dublin Medical Schools.

42.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware that Irish-born students with the necessary academic requirements have been unable to obtain places in Dublin medical schools; and what action he proposes taking to remedy the matter.

I would refer the Deputy to my replies to his question of 4th November, 1969, and to his question and supplementary question of 17th June, 1970, to which I have nothing to add.

The Minister stated previously that he was not aware of any Irish students with academic qualifications being refused admission to Irish medical schools. I would like him to clarify the statement which he has made on two previous occasions that he is not in fact aware of any Irish student failing to obtain admission to an Irish medical school.

As I explained to the Deputy in November last, I had been informed then that in the case of the medical schools at TCD and the Royal College of Surgeons no student within the State who qualified for entry was refused entry. In the case of the college of the National University of Ireland in all only 16 students from outside the State were admitted to the medical school and of those nine came from Northern Ireland and all of the remainder had some connection with Ireland.
