Vol. 247 No. 12

Ceisteanna—Questions. Oral Answers. - Garda Síochána Housing.

33.

asked the Minister for Justice if he is prepared to consider the provision of more houses for members of the Garda Síochána as many members cannot avail themselves of a transfer due to lack of housing in many towns.

At present, over 2,000 members of the force are provided with official accommodation and in accordance with the recommendations of the Conroy Commission, sergeants and guards will, if married, receive a rent allowance of £2 and, if single, £1 a week.

Within the county boroughs of Dublin, Cork, Limerick and Waterford no living-in accommodation for married members of the force is provided and, for the future, no living-in quarters will be provided in newly built stations for single gardaí.

In the provinces, with each newly built station, married quarters are provided for the member-in-charge. Apart from this, it is not the intention to provide additional houses or quarters in the provinces and the Conroy Commission made no recommendations in this respect.
